Wed Jan 08 09:34:12 UTC 2025: ## Himalayan Earthquake Leaves Over 100 Dead, Thousands Displaced
**Beijing, China –** A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the foothills of the Himalayas on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, leaving at least 126 dead and 188 injured in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. Over 400 people trapped in the rubble have been rescued, and more than 30,000 residents have been relocated as rescue efforts continue into a second day.
The epicenter, located near Tingri in Tibet, approximately 80 kilometers north of Mount Everest, caused tremors felt in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Initial surveys reveal that 3,609 homes were destroyed in the Shigatse region alone. Sub-zero temperatures posed a significant threat to survivors trapped under debris, increasing the risk of hypothermia and dehydration.
Chinese authorities have deployed over 500 personnel and 106 ambulances to the affected area, delivering tents, food, generators, and other essential supplies. Road damage caused by the quake has been repaired. The China Earthquake Networks Centre reported over 500 aftershocks following the initial tremor.
The earthquake is attributed to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, a region known for its seismic activity. This quake is the most significant since a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in 2023, which resulted in at least 149 fatalities. While no deaths have been reported outside of Tibet, the region’s high altitude and the potential for further aftershocks remain concerns.
