**Washington D.C.** – Republican Congressman Lance Gooden is accusing the Biden administration of pursuing a politically motivated investigation into the Adani Group, a major Indian conglomerate, suggesting the timing is intended to disrupt the incoming Trump administration. In a scathing letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Gooden questioned the Justice Department’s priorities, arguing that pursuing alleged bribery within India undermines US-India relations and distracts from pressing domestic issues like violent crime.
The Adani Group and several senior officials were indicted in November on charges of defrauding US investors by concealing a bribery scheme to secure Indian government contracts. The Adani Group denies the allegations. Gooden contends that even if the allegations are true, the US is not the appropriate jurisdiction to prosecute, as the alleged bribes were paid to Indian officials within India. He warns that pursuing the case could severely damage the strategic alliance between the US and India.
Gooden’s letter highlights the importance of India as a key economic and political ally in the Asia-Pacific region and expresses concern that the investigation could harm India’s economic growth and discourage future US investment. He also criticized the DOJ for allegedly overlooking alleged wrongdoings by American executives and for not addressing domestic issues.
The congressman further questioned the timing of the indictment, suggesting it’s a deliberate attempt to undermine the incoming Trump administration. He explicitly asked Attorney General Garland whether there has been any communication or negotiation with George Soros or any entity associated with him regarding the Adani case. The letter includes a five-point questionnaire demanding clarification on the DOJ’s strategy, including plans for extradition and the potential for an international incident with India if extradition is refused.
The letter concludes by arguing that this investigation could negatively impact investor confidence and hinder economic growth in the US. The Adani Group is a subsidiary of AMG Media Networks Limited, which also owns NDTV.
