ATLANTA, GA – The annual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday observance in Atlanta will focus on “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365,” announced Dr. Bernice King, daughter of the civil rights icon, on Tuesday. This year’s theme emphasizes the continued relevance of King’s message of nonviolent resistance in addressing contemporary challenges such as mass shootings, homelessness, and economic inequality.

Speaking at the King Center, Dr. King highlighted her parents’ legacy of using nonviolent methods to fight injustice. She emphasized that the spirit of nonviolence, demonstrated by her father and mother in overcoming segregation, remains a powerful tool for positive change today.

Leading up to the January 20th holiday, a series of events will celebrate Dr. King’s life and work. The King Center will specifically honor his commitment to protecting freedom, justice, and democracy through nonviolent means. Dr. King noted the urgency of addressing economic injustice, a key focus of her father’s work in the years leading up to his assassination. She underscored the importance of carrying on his legacy of fighting for economic parity, especially given the current economic climate.
