Wed Jan 08 07:41:53 UTC 2025: ## Kolkata Metro Intensifies Suicide Prevention Campaign After Recent Tragedy
**Kolkata, West Bengal, January 8, 2025** – Following a suicide at Chandni Chowk metro station on January 6th that disrupted service for over two hours, Kolkata Metro Railway authorities have launched an intensified anti-suicide campaign. The incident, on the Dakshineswar-New Garia (Blue Line) corridor, affected thousands of commuters.
The campaign includes brightly colored banners placed strategically at various stations along the Blue Line to discourage people from approaching the platform edge. Announcements over the public address system have also been increased, urging passengers to stay behind the yellow line. CCTV monitoring from the station master’s room and central control at Metro Bhavan headquarters is being utilized to identify and address concerning commuter behavior.
While installing glass barriers between the platform and tracks is deemed infeasible on the older Blue Line due to logistical challenges with differing train lengths, the Metro is deploying posters in English and Bengali with messages such as “Think Twice Before You End All” and “You Have Your Family Members Waiting At Home, Think About Them.” Staff with counseling skills are also available at stations to assist distressed passengers.
Although the Metro does not have official statistics on suicide attempts on its tracks, the intensified campaign reflects a commitment to passenger safety and mental health support. The Lifeline Foundation helpline (+91 033 24637401, +91 033 24637432, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Sunday) is available for those in need.
