**Bengaluru, Karnataka –** Six Maoist rebels surrendered to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru on Wednesday, bringing an end to years of separation and uncertainty for their families. The emotional reunions highlighted the personal cost of the armed struggle, with relatives expressing relief and hope for the future.
Among those surrendering were Vasanth, an engineer from Tamil Nadu who had been absent for over a decade, and Latha, whose family hadn’t seen her in 15 years. Their family members described years of worry and suspicion, facing police inquiries and enduring the pain of their loved ones’ absence during family tragedies. One brother recounted how his sister, Latha, had stopped contacting the family after starting a tailoring course, only to later learn she had joined the Maoist movement.
The families expressed joy at their reunion but also appealed to the state government to address the underlying issues that drove their relatives to join the Maoist movement. They called for the withdrawal of “false cases” and a speedy resolution of the cases through a fast-track court, emphasizing that their relatives were motivated by a desire to help the poor and disadvantaged. The families believe the government should consider the demands fought for by the Maoists over the years.
