Wed Jan 08 11:18:02 UTC 2025: **Italian Journalist Freed From Iranian Detention After Three Weeks**
ROME, Italy – Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, 29, was released from Iranian detention on Wednesday and is returning home, Italian officials announced. Sala, a reporter for the Il Foglio daily, had been held in Tehran since December 19th, accused of violating Iranian law. Her release followed “intensive diplomatic and intelligence work,” according to Premier Giorgia Meloni’s office.
Sala’s detention became entangled with the arrest of Iranian engineer Mohammad Abedini in Milan on December 16th on a U.S. warrant for allegedly supplying drone technology used in a January 2024 attack on a U.S. outpost in Jordan. While Abedini remains in Italian custody, Sala’s release has been celebrated in Italy.
The timing of Meloni’s recent surprise trip to Florida to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has fueled speculation about the role of US-Italy negotiations in Sala’s freedom. Italian officials have highlighted the diplomatic efforts involved, noting the complex geopolitical situation given Italy’s close ties to both the U.S. and Iran.
This is not the first time Iran has used Western detainees as bargaining chips. Similar incidents involving American journalists Roxana Saberi and Jason Rezaian have occurred in the past. Sala’s case underscores the ongoing tensions between Iran and the West.
