Wed Jan 08 11:40:00 UTC 2025: ## India Monitors First Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases; Health Officials Stress No Cause for Alarm
**NEW DELHI** – India has confirmed its first cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus, sparking a cautious response from health officials. Seven cases have been reported across Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. While a six-month-old baby in Mumbai also tested positive, health authorities nationwide are emphasizing that HMPV is not a new virus and that the current situation does not warrant widespread public concern.
Health experts have clarified that HMPV, which causes flu-like symptoms, has circulated previously. The recent increase in detected cases is attributed to colder weather conditions, which can lower immunity and increase the spread of respiratory infections. They also pointed out that existing vaccinations, such as regular flu shots and the three-dose COVID-19 vaccine, offer some level of protection. While there is no specific HMPV vaccine, these measures can provide immunity.
Several states have taken precautionary measures. Gujarat, for example, has established isolation wards in hospitals. Other states, including Maharashtra, Punjab, and Karnataka, have issued reassurances to the public, stressing the virus is generally mild and self-limiting, and that their healthcare systems are prepared to manage any potential increase in cases. Officials in these states, and at the national level, are closely monitoring the situation and encouraging preventative measures such as handwashing, mask-wearing in crowded areas, and seeking medical attention for persistent symptoms.
Although a study has indicated a possible link between HMPV infection and acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized children, health officials are stressing that the majority of infections are mild. The Union Health Ministry is urging increased surveillance for respiratory illnesses and public awareness campaigns. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also stated that the recent increase in respiratory pathogen detections globally is within expected seasonal ranges. While China is experiencing a rise in influenza cases, the WHO reports no unusual outbreak patterns.
While some states reported suspected cases, several others, including Punjab, have reported no cases to date. Health officials across India continue to emphasize the importance of preventive measures and urge the public to remain calm and follow guidelines issued by the government.
