Wed Jan 08 12:04:17 UTC 2025: ## France Rejects Trump’s Greenland Suggestion, Doubts Military Action

**PARIS** – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot today dismissed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that military force could be used to acquire Greenland, stating that the European Union would never tolerate such an attack on its sovereign territory. While acknowledging a potentially more volatile global climate, Barrot expressed doubt that Trump would actually launch an invasion.

“It is out of the question that the European Union would allow other countries…to attack its sovereign borders, whoever they are,” Barrot declared on French radio. He added, “If you’re asking me whether I think the United States will invade Greenland, my answer is no.” However, he conceded that the world may be entering a more unpredictable era where such actions might become more plausible.

Trump’s comments, made Tuesday, refused to rule out the use of military force to obtain Greenland or the Panama Canal. When asked about using economic or military coercion to gain control of either location, he replied, “I’m not gonna commit to that. No. It might be that you’ll have to do something.” The European Commission has yet to formally respond.

Barrot’s statement follows recent concerns regarding underwater cable sabotage incidents. The news also comes amid unrelated developments including political maneuvering in Austria and accusations against Russia for a recent airliner crash.
