**Raipur, Chhattisgarh, January 8, 2025** – A major Naxalite attack in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Monday claimed the lives of eight security personnel, marking the deadliest such incident in the state in two years. Five of the victims were former Naxalites who had surrendered and joined the District Reserve Guard (DRG), a state police force comprised of local recruits.
According to Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P., Head Constable Budhram Korsa, and constables Dumma Markam, Pandaru Ram, Baman Sodhi of the DRG, and constable Somdu Vetti of the Bastar Fighters unit, were all ex-Naxalites. The attack involved a bomb detonated near Ambeli village, targeting a convoy of security personnel. Four personnel from the DRG and four from the Bastar Fighters, along with a civilian driver, were killed.
The DRG, a frontline anti-Naxal force, was established in phases across seven districts of Bastar starting in 2008. The Bastar Fighters unit, also composed of local youth, was formed in 2022. Last year alone, 792 Naxalites surrendered in the Bastar region. The incident underscores the ongoing struggle against Left-Wing Extremism in the region.
