**London, UK** – Billionaire Elon Musk has again raised concerns about a looming global population collapse, highlighting the issue as one of the world’s most pressing challenges. Musk retweeted a post featuring a graph projecting significant population declines in major countries by 2100, including China and India.
The graph, originally shared by the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley account, shows that while India and China currently boast populations exceeding 1.5 billion, both are projected to experience dramatic drops by the end of the century. China’s population is forecast to plummet to approximately 731.9 million, while India’s is expected to fall to just under 1.1 billion. This would leave Nigeria as the world’s second most populous nation.
Musk’s endorsement of the post, simply stating “Yes,” underscores his growing alarm about this demographic trend. Experts have long acknowledged the declining global fertility rate, currently below the 2.1 children per woman needed to maintain a stable population. This decline, coupled with factors like emigration and aging populations, is driving the projected population decreases.
The UK, for example, recently recorded its lowest ever fertility rate at 1.44 children per woman. Globally, fertility rates have plummeted from an average of 5.3 children per woman in 1963 to less than half that today.
While some countries, like the United States, Canada, and Australia, are expected to maintain relatively stable populations due to immigration, the projected declines in populous nations like China and India are significant. Other currently high-growth nations, including Indonesia and Pakistan, are also anticipated to see population decreases by 2100. Conversely, countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia are projected to experience substantial population growth.
This issue isn’t new for Musk, who has frequently voiced his concerns about the potential for global population collapse, suggesting it poses a significant threat to humanity. The recent social media post renews the focus on this complex and evolving demographic challenge.
