Wed Jan 08 15:29:10 UTC 2025: ## Kerala Book Festival Panel Discusses Constitutional Amendments

**Thiruvananthapuram, January 8, 2025** – A panel discussion at the Kerala Legislative International Book Festival (KLIBF) saw broad agreement among representatives from various political parties on the need for constitutional amendments to reflect contemporary needs. However, sharp disagreements emerged regarding the *nature* of these amendments.

CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan advocated for amendments that strengthen democracy and societal well-being, while criticizing the current central government’s attempts to “saffronize” the Constitution through policies like the Uniform Civil Code and Citizenship Amendment Act. He argued these policies promote polarization and exacerbate wealth inequality.

Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala emphasized the importance of preserving the Constitution’s basic structure while allowing for necessary changes. He raised concerns about the integrity of the current electoral system, advocating for a return to ballot papers from electronic voting machines to restore public trust.

BJP leader P.K. Krishnadas also supported amending the Constitution to suit modern times, framing the issue as a rejection of “politics of fear” and a push towards building a “new India”.

The panel discussion highlighted the diverse perspectives on constitutional reform within India’s political landscape, with differing views on the direction and purpose of any proposed changes.
