Tue Jan 07 19:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Andrews Airmen Keep Airfield Open Despite Heavy Snowfall
**JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –** A massive winter storm dropped 10 to 12 inches of snow on Joint Base Andrews overnight January 6th, 2025, but the base remained fully operational thanks to the tireless efforts of the 316th Civil Engineer Squadron (CES). The CES team, nicknamed the “snow barn,” initiated 24-hour operations the day before the storm hit, deploying heavy machinery to clear snow and ice from runways and roads.
Their primary focus was maintaining the flight line and taxiways, ensuring safe landings and taxiing for incoming aircraft. This was particularly crucial given the upcoming state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter later in the week. Staff Sgt. Jesus Barrios of the 316th CES highlighted the importance of keeping the airfield open for critical airlift missions.
The 316th CES successfully kept the flight line operational throughout the storm, demonstrating their vital role in maintaining base readiness regardless of weather conditions. Their dedication ensured the safe and uninterrupted operation of Joint Base Andrews during a significant winter event.
