Wed Jan 08 17:32:47 UTC 2025: ## Deadly 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Killing at Least 126
**Kathmandu/New Delhi, January 7, 2025** – A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the Tibet-Nepal border early this morning, claiming the lives of at least 126 people, according to Chinese state media Xinhua. The quake, which struck at 6:35 AM local time, was centered in Tingri county, Shigatse city, a popular tourist area near Mount Everest. Tremors were felt across a wide area, reaching parts of India including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) in India reported two further aftershocks, measuring 4.7 and 4.9 on the Richter scale, shortly after the initial quake. While tremors were felt strongly in Bihar, causing residents to evacuate buildings, no significant damage has been reported in the Indian region.
Tingri, approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Lhasa, is situated in a seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, a geological feature responsible for the formation of the Himalayas and frequent earthquake activity in the region. The region’s vulnerability was tragically highlighted by the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake, a 7.8 magnitude event that resulted in nearly 9,000 deaths and widespread destruction. The full extent of damage and casualties from today’s earthquake in Tibet remains to be determined. Rescue and assessment efforts are currently underway.
