Tue Jan 07 00:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Pulitzer Winner Quits Washington Post After Cartoon Rejected

**Washington, D.C.** – Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes has resigned from The Washington Post after the newspaper’s opinions section rejected her cartoon depicting tech billionaires and media moguls genuflecting before a statue of President-elect Donald Trump. The cartoon, which included Amazon’s Jeff Bezos (also owner of The Post), Mark Zuckerberg, and others, was deemed too repetitive by the opinions editor, David Shipley, who cited recently published columns on the same topic.

Telnaes, who joined The Post in 2008, stated in a Substack post that this was the first time in her tenure a cartoon had been rejected based on its subject matter, characterizing the decision as a “dangerous” precedent for press freedom. Shipley, while acknowledging Telnaes’ contributions, defended his decision, emphasizing a concern about redundancy in the publication’s content. He reportedly attempted to persuade Telnaes to reconsider her resignation.

The decision has drawn criticism from other prominent cartoonists, including Matt Wuerker of Politico, who called the rejection “spineless.” The controversy highlights ongoing debates about editorial control and the potential for perceived bias in news organizations. Telnaes has not yet publicly commented further on her resignation.
