Tue Jan 07 06:57:38 UTC 2025: ## Seattle Police Officer Fired for Fatal Crash Killing Indian Student
**Seattle, WA – January 7, 2025** – The Seattle Police Department has fired Officer Kevin Dave following his involvement in the January 2023 death of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula. Dave was driving at 74 mph (119 km/h) to a drug overdose call when he struck Kandula, who was crossing the street. The impact threw her 100 feet.
Interim Seattle Police Chief Sue Rahr announced the termination, citing violations of four department policies, including improper use of emergency lights and unsafe vehicle operation. While acknowledging Dave’s intention to respond quickly to the emergency call, Chief Rahr stated that the “tragic consequences of his dangerous driving” could not be overlooked.
This dismissal follows the earlier termination of Officer Daniel Auderer, who was fired for insensitive comments and laughter following the crash. Bodycam footage revealed Auderer’s callous remarks about Kandula’s “limited value,” causing further outrage.
The Consulate General of India in Seattle has actively pursued justice for Kandula’s family, working closely with authorities throughout the investigation. The Consulate expressed relief at the outcome, stating that it brings a sense of closure and justice. The case had previously been referred to the Seattle City Attorney’s office for review.
