**New Delhi, January 7, 2025** – India is on the verge of achieving a landmark milestone in electoral participation, with the country soon surpassing one billion registered voters, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced today.
Addressing a press conference, Mr. Kumar highlighted 2024 as a significant year for global democracy, witnessing elections involving two-thirds of the world’s population in democratic nations. He lauded India’s own electoral process, citing record-high voter turnout and participation, particularly among women, in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
With the release of the updated electoral rolls, Mr. Kumar stated that India is currently nearing 99 crore (990 million) voters. The addition of final revisions from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Punjab, expected today, will push the total past the 99 crore mark for the first time. The number of registered women voters is projected to reach approximately 48 crore (480 million). This surge in voter registration will soon make India the first nation with over one billion voters, setting a new global record.
