Tue Jan 07 06:05:20 UTC 2025: ## India Reports 3 Cases of HMPV Virus; Health Ministry Advises Caution

**New Delhi, India** – India has reported its first three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue an advisory urging caution, particularly among vulnerable populations. While the ministry assures the public there is no cause for widespread alarm as HMPV is not a new virus, it stresses the importance of preventive measures.

According to the health ministry, HMPV primarily affects young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. These groups are at a higher risk of developing serious complications. Symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and in some cases, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis.

The ministry recommends several preventive strategies to curb the spread of HMPV, including frequent handwashing with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing a mask in crowded areas. Avoiding close contact with infected individuals and regularly disinfecting frequently touched surfaces are also crucial.

While there is currently no vaccine or antiviral treatment for HMPV, mild cases typically resolve within a week with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to manage fever and congestion. However, those experiencing severe symptoms are advised to seek medical attention. The ministry emphasizes that while HMPV shares similarities with other respiratory viruses, proactive measures can significantly reduce the risk of infection and serious illness.
