Tue Jan 07 04:51:21 UTC 2025: ## Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases Rise in India, Government Assures Public
**New Delhi, India** – India is on high alert after five cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) were reported across three states on Monday. Two cases each were confirmed in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with one in Gujarat. An additional two cases were reported in Nagpur on Tuesday. All confirmed cases involve children.
While the news has sparked concerns due to recent HMPV outbreaks in China, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has stressed that there is no cause for widespread panic. He stated that HMPV is not a new virus, having been identified in 2001, and that the government is closely monitoring the situation. The Health Ministry, ICMR, and NCDC are actively tracking developments in China and neighboring countries, collaborating with the WHO for updates.
Minister Nadda emphasized that there has been no significant increase in general respiratory illnesses in India. He further advised preventative measures such as handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and maintaining social distance from those exhibiting flu-like symptoms.
Several states, including Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, have issued alerts and are taking precautionary steps. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will hold a meeting to discuss preparedness and response strategies.
HMPV is a common respiratory virus that can cause symptoms similar to the flu, affecting people of all ages, but particularly children. It is spread through respiratory droplets. The virus is more prevalent during winter and early spring.
While social media has seen comparisons to COVID-19, experts have assured the public that the situation does not warrant drastic measures such as lockdowns. The government continues to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
