NEW DELHI – India has confirmed eight cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has previously been identified in China. While the virus, first discovered in 2001, has been circulating globally for years, its recent emergence in India has prompted concerns.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda has urged the public not to panic, assuring citizens that the situation is being closely monitored. HMPV, according to Dr. Shrey Srivastava, Senior Consultant of Internal Medicine at Sharda Hospital, primarily affects the respiratory system and can cause mild to severe infections. Children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications. While the mortality rate is lower than that of COVID-19, HMPV can lead to rare cases of pneumonia in vulnerable populations. The virus is most common during the late winter and early spring months.
Symptoms are similar to COVID-19 and include cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, asthma and pneumonia may develop. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. Preventive measures include regular handwashing, avoiding touching the face, wearing masks, and practicing social distancing.
While the government stresses the need for calm, it encourages individuals to follow expert advice and seek medical attention if they experience health concerns.
