Tue Jan 07 15:52:41 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Bar Council Urges Madras High Court to Prioritize Diversity in Judge Appointments

**Chennai, January 7, 2025** – The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTNP) has called on the Madras High Court Chief Justice K.R. Shriram to ensure diverse representation when recommending new High Court judges this year. With 12 judges set to retire from the court’s current 66-judge bench (against a sanctioned strength of 75), the BCTNP emphasized the need to fill vacancies with lawyers and judicial officers from various social groups, including minorities and women.

In a formal representation also sent to the Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court collegium members, and consultee judges, the BCTNP stressed that appointments should be based on merit, integrity, and wisdom, to ensure fair and equitable justice for all citizens. The representation was signed by BCTNP Chairman P.S. Amalraj, Vice-chairman V. Karthikeyan, and Bar Council of India Vice-chairman S. Prabakaran. The council highlighted the importance of a diverse judiciary in upholding the principles of justice and inclusivity.
