Mon Jan 06 19:30:42 UTC 2025: ## Chennai’s ₹26.61 Crore Health Walkway Project Stalled, Residents Claim

**Chennai, January 7, 2025** – Residents of Chennai are expressing frustration over the lack of progress on a ₹26.61 crore health walkway project announced in 2024 by the Tamil Nadu state government. The project, overseen by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), was intended to create 16 walkways across various zones, including Tondiarpet, MKB Nagar, and Nanganallur.

While the GCC claims the project is underway, with funding allocated from Capital funds and the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (Turif), residents report no visible improvements. V. Rama Rao, president of the Federation of Senior Citizens, Tamil Nadu, noted a complete lack of progress in Nanganallur, where vendors currently occupy pavements, hindering pedestrian access. He suggested project completion before the 2026 elections would benefit voters, particularly senior citizens.

Similar concerns were raised by a Tondiarpet resident, Dilli, who highlighted damaged sidewalks and overflowing waste as significant obstacles to safe pedestrian movement. The accumulated waste not only poses safety risks but also causes drainage issues.

Chennai Deputy Mayor M. Magesh Kumaar acknowledged the complaints and promised to investigate, emphasizing the need to expedite the project and enhance Chennai’s streets to international standards, prioritizing pedestrian needs. The discrepancy between the corporation’s claims and residents’ observations highlights a concerning delay in a project intended to improve public health and safety.
