Sun Jan 05 20:19:14 UTC 2025: ## OYO Implements New Policy Requiring Proof of Relationship for Couples in Meerut
**Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India –** In response to ongoing protests and complaints, budget hotel chain OYO has implemented a new policy in Meerut requiring couples to provide proof of their relationship before check-in. The rule, effective January 1st, 2025, applies to all bookings, whether made online or directly at the hotel. Hotels will have the discretion to deny entry to unmarried couples.
The policy, currently a trial run in Meerut, may be expanded nationwide. OYO operates in partnership with over 10,000 hotels across India. The company states that while respecting personal freedom, it also acknowledges the need to address societal concerns and market demands. The policy will be reviewed periodically.
The decision follows numerous protests and raids on OYO hotels in Meerut. Feedback from local social organizations and residents, specifically calling for restrictions on single occupants and unmarried couples, contributed to the policy change. A petition filed against OYO also played a role in the company’s decision. OYO has clarified that partner hotels retain the right to reject bookings based on social sensitivities.
This new policy comes as OYO announced its first-ever annual profit in fiscal year 2024, with a net profit of approximately ₹100 crore (approximately $12 million USD). Company founder Ritesh Agarwal attributed this success to happy customers and hotel partners.
