Mon Jan 06 08:00:39 UTC 2025: ## Oyo Implements New Check-In Policy Restricting Unmarried Couples in India

**Meerut, India –** Budget hotel chain Oyo has implemented a new check-in policy in Meerut, India, prohibiting unmarried couples from checking into its partner hotels. The policy, which requires couples to provide proof of their relationship, will eventually be rolled out nationwide.

The company cites concerns about local sensitivities and pressure from civil society groups as the reason for the change. Oyo’s North India regional head, Pawas Sharma, stated that the company is committed to providing safe and responsible hospitality while acknowledging the laws and concerns of the communities it serves. This initiative, Oyo says, aims to improve its brand image and attract families, students, and business travelers, ultimately increasing long stays and repeat bookings.

The new policy mandates that couples must present proof of their relationship, such as a marriage certificate, for both online and offline bookings. Oyo has also empowered its partner hotels to refuse bookings from couples based on their assessment of local social sensitivities. The company has initiated further measures to enhance safety, including seminars with police and hotel partners on safe hospitality practices, and blacklisting hotels involved in allegedly unethical activities.

While Oyo claims it has received feedback from civil society groups in Meerut and petitions from other cities urging restrictions on unmarried couples, the decision has sparked debate regarding privacy and individual liberties. Oyo plans to review and potentially adjust the policy based on feedback received from its implementation in Meerut before expanding it across India.
