Sun Jan 05 17:44:44 UTC 2025: ## M23 Rebels Seize Strategic Town in Eastern DRC, Displacing Thousands

**Goma, DRC –** M23 rebels have captured the strategically important town of Masisi in North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), sparking a new wave of displacement and raising concerns about the escalating conflict in the east. Local politicians confirmed the takeover on Sunday, following the rebel advance on Saturday.

Masisi, located approximately 80km from Goma, serves as an administrative center and is rich in agricultural resources and minerals. Its fall represents a significant victory for the M23, adding to recent territorial gains by the group. Provincial parliament member Alexis Bahunga stated that the government intends to regain control of the area. However, another deputy, Jean-Pierre Ayobangira Safari, acknowledged the rebels’ current control.

The fighting has forced thousands to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring areas, including the already overcrowded city of Goma, which currently hosts four million displaced people. Al Jazeera reports a tense security situation in Masisi and cites concerns over the potential threat to Goma and Bukavu.

The UN has reported nearly a million people displaced by the conflict in the past year. The DRC accuses neighboring Rwanda of supporting the M23, a claim Rwanda denies. Recent peace talks mediated by Angola were cancelled in December due to disagreements. The M23, primarily composed of Tutsis, claims to be defending against Hutu forces who fled Rwanda following the 1994 genocide. Their actions, however, have created a major humanitarian crisis affecting millions. The capture of Masisi, with its estimated 40,000 residents, significantly strengthens the M23’s position and raises fears of further instability in the region. President Felix Tshisekedi has reiterated his stance against direct dialogue with the M23.
