Mon Jan 06 06:59:25 UTC 2025: ## Israeli Soldier Flees Brazil Amid War Crimes Investigation

**Jerusalem, January 6, 2025** – An Israeli former soldier has fled Brazil after a human rights group filed a war crimes complaint against him, sparking international attention and highlighting the potential for prosecution of Israeli soldiers abroad. The Hind Rajab Foundation, named after a Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, initiated legal action based on social media posts allegedly showing the soldier’s involvement in the demolition of civilian homes during the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Brazilian authorities launched an investigation following the complaint, which included video evidence, geolocation data, and photographs. While Brazilian authorities have yet to comment publicly, the investigation prompted the Israeli Foreign Ministry to assist the soldier in leaving Brazil on a commercial flight. The Ministry issued a warning to Israeli soldiers against posting about their military service on social media.

The incident underscores the growing international scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, while the International Court of Justice is investigating genocide allegations. This case raises the possibility that individual soldiers could face prosecution in foreign courts for actions taken during the conflict.

Israel maintains that its forces act within international law and that any violations are dealt with internally. They blame Hamas for civilian casualties, claiming the militant group uses residential buildings to conceal infrastructure. However, numerous videos posted online by Israeli soldiers appear to contradict this claim, showing them destroying homes and engaging in potentially unlawful behaviour.

The ongoing conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in a devastating toll. Over 45,800 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to local health officials, while Israel reports killing over 17,000 militants. The war has also caused widespread destruction and displacement, affecting nearly 90% of Gaza’s population. Israeli airstrikes continue, with reports of further civilian casualties. Meanwhile, in the West Bank, Israeli forces killed a member of the Palestinian security services, identifying him as a wanted militant. The situation remains tense and fraught with international concern.
