**Bengaluru, India** – An eight-month-old baby in Bengaluru has tested positive for the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), according to the Karnataka Health Department. The child, who has no recent travel history, is the latest case to raise awareness around respiratory illnesses, coming on the heels of a surge in respiratory infections in China. While the strain of HMPV in the Bengaluru case remains unclear, the Union Health Ministry assures the public that India is prepared to manage any increase in respiratory illnesses and that the situation is being closely monitored. The Ministry held a joint monitoring group meeting on Saturday to discuss the situation in China and reports indicating influenza, RSV, and HMPV are the main causes of the surge there.
