**NEW DELHI, January 3, 2025** – Delhi health authorities have issued a precautionary advisory in response to a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China. While India has not experienced a significant surge in respiratory illnesses, according to data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the World Health Organization (WHO) as of January 2nd, Delhi is taking proactive measures to ensure preparedness.
A meeting chaired by Dr. Vandana Bagga, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), on Sunday directed hospitals to enhance surveillance and reporting of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases through the IHIP portal. Strict isolation protocols and universal precautions for suspected cases are now mandatory. Hospitals have also been instructed to maintain detailed records of SARI and lab-confirmed influenza cases and ensure adequate supplies of essential medications like paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, and cough syrups, along with oxygen.
A DGHS official stated that although news of the HMPV outbreak in China is circulating, analysis of Indian data reveals no substantial increase in respiratory illnesses in December 2024. The official emphasized that there is no cause for alarm at present. However, the NCDC continues to closely monitor respiratory and seasonal influenza cases nationwide. The advisory serves as a preventative measure to ensure Delhi’s healthcare system is well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses.
