**New Delhi, [Date]** – A surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China, leading to overflowing hospitals, has prompted health authorities in India to increase vigilance. Three cases of HMPV have been confirmed in India today – two in Bengaluru and one in Ahmedabad – raising concerns despite the infected infants and their families having no recent travel history.
HMPV, a common respiratory virus causing cold-like symptoms, typically affects young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems most severely. While generally not life-threatening, it can cause pneumonia or bronchiolitis in severe cases. Dr. Ankita Baidya, Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Manipal Hospital, emphasized that while HMPV is not a new virus, the current outbreak warrants monitoring for the emergence of new strains.
The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, direct contact, and contaminated surfaces, and is most contagious during the symptomatic phase. Symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever, and sore throat, usually resolving within 7-10 days for healthy individuals. However, Dr. Baidya stressed the importance of seeking medical attention for severe symptoms, particularly in high-risk groups.
While there is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment, preventative measures such as frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and disinfecting surfaces are recommended. Antibiotics are ineffective against HMPV, as it’s a viral infection. Diagnosis is typically done through PCR testing of a respiratory sample.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation in India and urging the public to practice good hygiene and seek medical advice if they experience severe symptoms.
