Mon Jan 06 11:59:09 UTC 2025: ## India Confirms First Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

**New Delhi, India** – India has confirmed its first three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus, the Union health ministry announced Monday. The cases involve three infants: a three-month-old in Bengaluru who has been discharged, an eight-month-old in Bengaluru currently recovering in hospital, and a two-month-old in Ahmedabad.

Importantly, none of the affected infants or their families have recent travel history, suggesting the virus may already be circulating within India. This follows recent outbreaks reported in other countries, including China.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will continue monitoring HMPV circulation nationally. The health ministry is utilizing all available surveillance channels to track the situation. Several state governments, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Delhi, have proactively released guidelines to prepare for potential HMPV-related health challenges, mirroring strategies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

HMPV, first identified in 2001, causes flu-like symptoms and poses a higher risk to young children under five, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. While the current situation is under close observation, the government is assuring the public that steps are being taken to manage any potential spread.
