**Paris, France** – Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy went on trial Monday, accused of accepting illegal campaign financing from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The trial, expected to last until April 10th, stems from a decade-long investigation into allegations that Sarkozy received approximately €50 million from Gaddafi to fund his successful 2007 presidential campaign.
The prosecution claims that in exchange for the funds, Sarkozy and his associates pledged to improve Gaddafi’s international standing. This alleged pact allegedly began in 2005, during a meeting between Sarkozy (then Interior Minister) and Gaddafi in Tripoli. The prosecution cites a 2006 document, purportedly from a former Libyan official, as evidence of this agreement. However, Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain, vehemently denies the accusations, calling the prosecution’s case an “artificial construction” and insisting there’s no evidence of Libyan financing.
Several high-profile figures are also on trial, including Sarkozy’s former right-hand man, Claude Gueant, and his campaign finance chief, Eric Woerth. The defense teams for these individuals similarly deny any wrongdoing.
The case took a dramatic turn in 2020 when a key witness, Franco-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, retracted his earlier testimony implicating Sarkozy. This has led to further accusations against Sarkozy, including charges of illegal witness tampering and evidence concealment, filed against him and his wife, Carla Bruni, respectively.
Sarkozy, already convicted twice on separate charges since leaving office, faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. This trial adds to the numerous legal battles that have shadowed his career since his 2012 election defeat. Despite these challenges, he remains a significant figure in French politics.
