Mon Jan 06 15:54:45 UTC 2025: ## India Reassures Public Amidst Few Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Cases

**NEW DELHI/BENGALURU/AHMEDABAD** – Three cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been detected in India, sparking minor concern but prompting health officials to stress the situation is not alarming. Two cases were reported in Bengaluru, Karnataka, and one in Gujarat. Health experts are emphasizing that HMPV is not a new virus and is not comparable to COVID-19.

Dr. Neeraj Nischal of AIIMS Delhi explained that HMPV has been known since 2001, with evidence suggesting its presence since the late 1950s. Most children develop immunity by age 10. He described HMPV infections as generally mild, lasting a few days with no reported fatalities. The Karnataka Health Minister, Dinesh Gundurao, similarly reassured the public, stating there is no cause for alarm and no surge in cases.

Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that HMPV infections, particularly during winter, are not uncommon. While there is no specific vaccine or drug, treatment focuses on managing symptoms, with recovery typically within 5-7 days. Both doctors advised isolating oneself if experiencing symptoms like fever, cold, or cough, and suggested wearing masks when necessary.

Although a recent HMPV outbreak in China garnered international attention, Indian health officials clarified that the Indian situation is distinct. The Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation, but currently sees no indication of a widespread outbreak. They recommend practicing basic hygiene, including frequent handwashing and avoiding crowded areas when unwell.
