Mon Jan 06 15:27:34 UTC 2025: ## Rameswaram CITU Protests Sewage Discharge into Sacred Agnitheertham

**RAMESWARAM, January 6, 2025** – Members of the Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest in Rameswaram on Monday, condemning the discharge of untreated sewage into the Agnitheertham, a sacred water body. The protestors swept the seashore road as a symbolic act of cleaning up the pollution.

CITU fishing workers association secretary, Karunamurthy, criticized the discharge of unfiltered sewage from nearby commercial and residential buildings. He stated that this pollution is causing serious health risks to devotees who bathe in the Agnitheertham as part of religious rituals.

Karunamurthy further highlighted a discrepancy between an official’s statement to the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court – claiming sewage water is filtered before discharge – and the actual, unfiltered condition of the water. He urged the court to ensure the official’s claims are verified and that the discharge is indeed filtered.
