Mon Jan 06 05:11:46 UTC 2025: ## Kerala’s AI-Powered Traffic Cameras Drive Down Road Fatalities

**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, January 6, 2025** – Despite recent high-profile accidents, Kerala saw a significant decrease in road fatalities in 2024, according to the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB). The number of deaths dropped to 3,714, a 10% decrease from 4,080 in 2023 and a continuation of a downward trend since 2019 (excluding COVID-19 impacted years).

While improved road conditions and increased safety awareness contributed to the decline, experts attribute the most significant impact to the AI-powered traffic camera system implemented in major urban areas. The system, launched June 5, 2023, as a five-year, ₹232 crore project, has resulted in 66.41 lakh traffic violations and ₹428.40 crore in fines in its first year alone.

Samson Mathew, former director of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC), stated that the cameras have fostered a “road culture,” compelling drivers to follow traffic rules. He advocated for expanding the project to include more areas, utilizing advanced technologies like mobile and drone surveillance. The overall number of road accidents, however, has slightly increased.
