NEW DELHI – India has confirmed its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection in an eight-month-old child. While the World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared a global health emergency, the detection has raised concerns, particularly given the virus’s recent surge in China. The Delhi government has issued an advisory on preventative measures.
HMPV, a respiratory virus related to RSV, causes symptoms similar to influenza, including fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing and pneumonia. Infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe complications.
Although initially identified in 2001, the recent increase in HMPV cases in China has sparked fears of a potential pandemic. While the virus’s symptoms often mimic those of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses, health experts advise vigilance.
The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation. Further information on prevention and treatment is expected to be released by health authorities. The advisory issued by Delhi emphasizes preventative measures such as hygiene and vaccination where applicable. The news follows the unrelated announcement by the Madhya Pradesh government renaming three villages.
