Mon Jan 06 12:35:09 UTC 2025: ## Oyo Hotels to Implement Ban on Unmarried Couples in Meerut

**Meerut, India** – Oyo, a major travel and hospitality platform, announced a new policy that will ban unmarried couples from checking into its affiliated hotels in Meerut, starting this year. The company will require all couples to provide proof of their relationship, such as a marriage certificate, at the time of check-in, both for online and in-person bookings.

This decision follows requests from local residents and civil society groups concerned about unmarried couples staying in hotels. While there are no specific laws in India prohibiting unmarried adults from booking hotels, Oyo’s new policy introduces a brand-specific requirement. The company states that the policy’s success in Meerut will determine its implementation in other cities.

The policy applies only to couples; individuals over 18 with valid ID proof (Aadhaar card, passport, driving license) can still book rooms. The minimum age requirement of 18 remains in place, and hotels retain the right to refuse service to guests who cannot provide identification or who engage in illegal activities. While police intervention is unlikely unless criminal activity is suspected, guests can assert their rights by presenting identification. Oyo emphasized that this policy is their own initiative and not mandated by any existing law.
