Mon Jan 06 08:52:31 UTC 2025: ## HMPV Virus Spreads to India, Cases Confirmed in Karnataka
**MUMBAI, INDIA** – A human metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak, originating in China, has reached India. Health officials in Karnataka have confirmed two cases, prompting a health advisory from the Maharashtra government and increased surveillance in Kerala. The central government has requested regular updates from the World Health Organization (WHO).
HMPV is a virus causing flu-like symptoms, primarily affecting the lungs. It is more prevalent during colder months and spreads through direct contact with an infected individual. Symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and in some cases, difficulty breathing. The virus poses a significant risk to young children, the elderly, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those with pre-existing lung conditions. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis. First identified in 2001 in the Netherlands, HMPV is considered a major cause of respiratory illness in winter and spring.
Currently, there is no vaccine or antiviral treatment specifically for HMPV. Most cases resolve with rest and hydration, but severe infections may require hospitalization and oxygen therapy. Experts advise against panic, emphasizing the importance of preventative measures, particularly during winter months.
