**Mangaluru, January 5, 2025** – Renowned Kannada novelist Na. D’Souza, a prominent voice for the Malnad region, passed away on Sunday at the age of 87. D’Souza, a resident of Sagar in Shivamogga district, had been admitted to Father Muller Hospital in Mangaluru for treatment of age-related health issues. He died around 8 p.m., according to family sources.

D’Souza’s literary career spanned over six decades, with his novels often reflecting the lives and struggles of the people of the Malnad region. His work, including novels like *Mulugade* and *Kolaga*, addressed issues such as the impact of the Sharavathi Valley Hydel Power Project and the Kagodu Satyagraha. He was also a vocal activist, leading protests against the proposed diversion of the Sharavathi River to Bengaluru in 2019.

The prolific author penned over 40 novels, numerous short stories, plays, and children’s literature. He also served as the president of the 80th Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Madikeri in 2014. Several of his works, including *Kadina Benki*, *Dweepa*, *Baluvali*, and *Antarya*, were adapted into successful films. *Dweepa*, directed by Girish Kasaravalli, garnered significant critical acclaim.

D’Souza’s contributions to Kannada literature were recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Pampa Award from the Karnataka government. His remains will be brought to Sagar on Monday for the final rites. He is survived by his wife, Philomena, and three children. His death marks a significant loss for Kannada literature and the Malnad region.
