Sat Jan 04 19:42:11 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Sanitation Workers’ Livelihoods Boosted by New Scheme

**Chennai, January 5, 2025** – Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday lauded sanitation workers in Chennai who have transitioned into entrepreneurs through a new city initiative. The program, launched in December 2024, provided approximately 100 advanced sewer cleaning machines to nearly 213 workers, significantly improving their working conditions and income.

The initiative, a partnership between the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department (MAWS) and the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI), provides training and support to help sanitation workers establish their own businesses. Workers reported earning between ₹60,000 and ₹70,000 per month, thanks to government subsidies on the machines. They also receive contracts for sewer maintenance and repairs, working both regularly and responding to resident complaints.

The Chennai Metrowater scheme guarantees a minimum monthly income of ₹50,000 and a seven-year operational and maintenance contract. Chief Minister Stalin reviewed the program’s progress, inquiring about worker training, income, and work hours during a visit to Teynampet. He praised their commitment to maintaining the city’s sewer network.
