Sat Jan 04 16:49:25 UTC 2025: ## Intense Russian Assault on Pokrovsk Threatens Ukrainian Supply Lines
**KYIV, January 5, 2025** – Fierce fighting continues near the strategically important Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, as Russian forces relentlessly attempt to encircle it from the south, cutting off vital supply routes to Ukrainian troops, according to Ukrainian military officials.
The assault on Pokrovsk, a crucial road and rail hub in the Donetsk region, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Capturing the city would severely hamper Ukrainian operations on the eastern front and allow Russia to reinforce and push further westward.
Victor Tregubov, spokesman for Ukraine’s Khortytsia group of forces, reported 34 Russian attacks in the past 24 hours targeting Ukrainian defenses south of Pokrovsk. He explained that Russia is employing a strategy of avoiding direct urban combat by attempting to bypass the city and disrupt supply lines instead. This tactic involves sending smaller groups of soldiers to settlements south of Pokrovsk.
Pre-war home to approximately 60,000 people, Pokrovsk now has an estimated population of 11,000. The city is also home to a mine that supplies all of Ukraine’s coking coal, a critical resource for its steel industry.
Ukraine is utilizing drones and precision weaponry to counter the Russian advance, attempting to prevent Russian troops from reaching their objectives. The situation remains tense, highlighting the ongoing struggle for control in eastern Ukraine.
