Sun Jan 05 08:30:00 UTC 2025: **OYO Bans Unmarried Couples From Hotels in India, Starting in Meerut**
NEW DELHI – Budget hotel chain OYO has announced a new policy banning unmarried couples from checking into its hotels in India, starting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The policy, effective in 2025, requires couples to provide proof of their relationship, such as a marriage certificate, upon check-in.
According to a report in Business Today citing PTI, the decision follows appeals from local residents and civil society groups concerned about unmarried couples staying in OYO hotels in Meerut and other cities. The company reportedly hopes this move will encourage longer stays and repeat bookings, boosting customer confidence.
OYO’s updated guidelines mandate that all couples, including those booking online, must present valid proof of their relationship at check-in. While the policy is initially being implemented in Meerut, OYO may expand it to other cities based on its effectiveness and feedback.
OYO operates in over 30 countries worldwide, with a network of more than 150,000 hotels and homes. This new policy marks a significant change to its previous practices, which allowed unmarried couples to easily book rooms.
