Sun Jan 05 00:49:29 UTC 2025: **India Assures Public Amidst Reports of China’s HMPV Surge**

NEW DELHI – India’s health ministry has downplayed concerns over a reported surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China, stating the situation is typical for the flu season and poses no immediate threat to India. A joint monitoring group, including experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), met today to assess the situation.

The group concluded that the increase in respiratory illnesses in China is due to common seasonal viruses like influenza, RSV, and HMPV. Indian surveillance systems, monitoring influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illnesses (SARI), show no unusual spike in cases. Data from the ICMR also reveals no significant increase in other respiratory viruses.

While acknowledging the situation in China, the government assures the public that India is well-prepared to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses. As a precaution, the ICMR will expand HMPV testing capacity and enhance year-round monitoring. A recent national preparedness drill further confirmed India’s readiness.

Dr. Atul Goel, a senior official with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), urged the public not to panic. He emphasized that HMPV causes symptoms similar to the common cold and only poses a risk to the very young and very old. He reiterated that there is no cause for alarm and that hospitals are adequately prepared for the typical winter increase in respiratory infections. The government is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with the WHO for updates.
