**Yangon, Myanmar –** Myanmar’s military government will release 5,864 prisoners, including 180 foreigners, as part of an amnesty to mark the country’s independence day, state media announced on Saturday. The move comes amid ongoing turmoil following the military’s February 2021 coup, which ousted the elected government and triggered widespread protests and armed resistance.
The junta’s planned elections later this year have been widely dismissed by opposition groups as illegitimate. The amnesty does not include all political prisoners, with notable figures such as former leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi remaining imprisoned. Suu Kyi is serving a 27-year sentence on multiple charges, all of which she denies. The ongoing instability and human rights concerns continue to draw international condemnation.
