Sat Jan 04 21:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Georgia Holds State Funeral for Former President Jimmy Carter

**Atlanta, GA –** Georgia today held a state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, honoring the life and legacy of the 39th president. The day’s events began with a family motorcade departing from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus at 10:15 a.m.

The motorcade, which included rolling road closures along its route, proceeded through several south Georgia towns, including Preston, Ellaville, Butler, Reynolds, and Fort Valley, allowing for public tributes along the way. Significant traffic delays were reported, particularly near the Carter Center in Atlanta where East John Lewis Freedom Parkway NE remained closed until noon on January 7th.

The motorcade paused at the Carter family farm in Plains, where a historic bell was rung 39 times in honor of the 39th president. It then proceeded to the Georgia State Capitol, where it was greeted by Governor Brian Kemp and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, before arriving at The Carter Center in Atlanta around 3:45 p.m.

A private service at the Carter Center followed at 4 p.m., featuring remarks from family members including grandson Jason Carter, and a performance by the Morehouse Glee Club. Nine current and former Secret Service agents served as pallbearers. The public had opportunities to view the motorcade in designated areas along the route. MARTA also adjusted its guidelines to accommodate public viewing. The day’s events concluded with the president lying in repose at the Carter Center.
