MEERUT, INDIA – OYO, a major hotel booking company, has implemented a new check-in policy in Meerut requiring couples to provide proof of their relationship. The policy, which also applies to online bookings, allows hotels to refuse bookings from couples who cannot provide such proof.

The company stated the policy is a response to feedback from local residents and social organizations in Meerut, reflecting local social norms. OYO indicated that similar requests have been received from other cities. While OYO hotels are permitted to accept or reject bookings from couples at their discretion, the implementation began in Meerut.

OYO North India Regional Head, Pawas Sharma, emphasized the company’s commitment to safe and responsible hospitality practices. He acknowledged the need to balance individual freedoms with compliance with local laws and community expectations. The policy’s effectiveness will be reviewed periodically.

OYO frames this new policy as part of a broader initiative to improve its image and attract families, students, business travelers, and solo travelers. The company aims to encourage longer stays and repeat bookings by enhancing customer trust and safety. This broader initiative also includes seminars with police and hotel partners, blacklisting hotels involved in inappropriate activities, and cracking down on misuse of the OYO brand.
