**Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea –** Daniel Pinto, a 27-year-old British adventurer on a quest to visit all 195 countries, has achieved a remarkable milestone. He has become the first tourist to visit several indigenous tribes in the remote regions of Papua New Guinea.
Pinto spent three weeks in the country, immersing himself in the lives of ten distinct tribes. His journey included encounters with groups known as the “skeleton tribe,” “crocodile people,” and “spirit birds.” Prior to his trip, Pinto conducted extensive research and collaborated with local guides to navigate the challenging terrain.
His experiences included participating in tribal ceremonies, attending a local wedding, going on hunting expeditions, and staying in traditional homes and guesthouses. Pinto reports receiving an overwhelmingly warm welcome from all the tribes he visited, describing them as “extremely friendly.”
He documented his journey on Instagram, proudly sharing that he was the first tourist to ever visit the remote island of Tumleo, located just two kilometers from Aitape. His videos showcase unique cultural practices, including rituals dedicated to protecting sacred waterfalls and celebrating births. He also detailed the intricate body scarring of the “crocodile people,” a practice marking the transition to adulthood.
While acknowledging some aspects of the tribal wedding ceremony made him uncomfortable, Pinto described the overall experience as fascinating. He highlighted the challenges of navigating the region, including dangerous roads that necessitated a five-hour boat journey instead of a potentially risky land route.
Pinto, who describes himself as a “danger tourist,” has previously visited high-risk destinations including Libya, Iraq, and Syria. He described Papua New Guinea as “the last frontier,” a place where he could experience cultures largely untouched by tourism. He emphasized the incredible friendliness of the people he met and the unique opportunity to explore truly uncharted territory.
