Sun Jan 05 04:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Bengal Storms to Vijay Hazare Trophy Top Spot, Shammi’s Return Adds to Victory

**Hyderabad:** Bengal cemented their position at the top of Group E in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a convincing six-wicket victory over Bihar on Friday. The win, achieved with 45 balls to spare, virtually guarantees Bengal a place in the knockout stages. However, whether they progress directly to the quarterfinals or play a pre-quarterfinal match will depend on their final group game against Madhya Pradesh.

All eyes were on Mohammad Shami, making his return to competitive cricket after a 360-day injury layoff. The fast bowler, last seen in action during the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, underwent ankle surgery following the tournament. He’s been making a comeback this season, playing in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but was recently sidelined with knee swelling, raising doubts about his selection for the upcoming Australia tour. Rohit Sharma had earlier stated that Shami wouldn’t play unless fully fit.

Despite the concerns, Shami returned to action on Friday, bowling eight overs (one maiden) and taking one wicket for 28 runs against Bihar. Bihar, batting first, were bowled out for 235 in 49 overs. Bengal chased down the target comfortably, reaching 236 for 4 in 42.3 overs. Sudip Kumar Gharami (107 not out) and Abhisek Porel (55) led the chase with impressive innings.

Bengal now boasts 18 points from five matches. The top team from each of the five groups will directly qualify for the quarterfinals. The remaining six teams with the highest points from the second-best teams in each group will contest pre-quarterfinals, with three advancing to the quarterfinals.
