Sat Jan 04 14:14:27 UTC 2025: ## Bangladesh to Investigate Past Election Irregularities
**DHAKA, BANGLADESH (January 4, 2025)** – Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) has launched an investigation into irregularities in previous elections, including the controversial 2014, 2018, and 2024 polls held under the Awami League government. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has directed regional election officers to examine the reasons for the decline in the electoral system and submit detailed reports.
The investigation follows widespread calls for electoral reform and accountability from civil society and the media. These past elections were marked by significant controversy. The 2014 election saw a boycott by the BNP, leading to unopposed victories for many candidates. The 2018 election was plagued by allegations of rigging, and the 2024 election faced criticism for the use of allegedly “dummy” opposition candidates.
The CEC has emphasized the importance of free, fair, and impartial elections, stating the EC’s commitment to regaining public trust through transparent processes. The newly formed EC, which assumed office in November 2024, is also undertaking other reform measures in preparation for the 13th National Election.
While the timing of the next election remains uncertain, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has suggested a timeframe between late 2025 and early 2026, contingent on an updated voter list. The Awami League’s participation in the upcoming election is currently contingent on any potential government or judicial bans.
