**CHENNAI, INDIA – December 15, 2024** – A new study confirms the benefits of handwriting, suggesting it enhances brain activity and memory recall more effectively than typing. Research published in *Frontiers in Psychology* and cited in *Scientific American* reveals that handwriting activates a wider range of brain regions associated with learning and memory compared to typing.
Researchers from Trondheim, Norway, monitored brain activity in schoolchildren using electroencephalography (EEG). The study showed that handwriting, whether writing or drawing, stimulated more brain regions than typing. Furthermore, students performed better on memory-based word games after handwriting tasks.
The research also highlighted the challenges of typing in languages with alphabets different from English, such as many Indian languages. These languages often include characters not readily available on standard keyboards, making handwriting a more practical and beneficial method for learning and communication. The study’s findings emphasize the importance of handwriting, particularly for children learning complex scripts. This underscores the potential educational advantages of incorporating handwriting exercises, even in our increasingly digital world.
