Sat Jan 04 17:10:00 UTC 2025: ## VA Announces Expanded GI Bill Benefits for Reenlisting Veterans
**Washington, D.C.** – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today a significant expansion of GI Bill benefits for veterans who served multiple periods of military service, specifically those who reenlisted. This policy change allows eligible veterans to receive up to 48 months of GI Bill benefits, rather than the previous 36-month limit.
Previously, veterans with multiple service periods were forced to choose between the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The updated policy eliminates this choice. Furthermore, many veterans may qualify for retroactive benefits, potentially receiving an additional 12 months of coverage. This applies to veterans who served periods qualifying for both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
The VA estimates that approximately 1.04 million veterans may be eligible for these expanded benefits. The agency will automatically process claims for roughly 660,000 veterans. The remaining veterans will be contacted directly by the VA to encourage them to file a claim. Applications for benefit extensions must be submitted by October 1, 2030.
For more information and to apply, veterans are encouraged to visit the Rudisill information page on the VBA’s education services webpage. Veterans seeking assistance can also contact Ask VA or call 1-800-698-2411. The VA emphasizes the importance of avoiding sharing personal information online, except on official, secure .gov websites.
