**Washington D.C.** – A groundbreaking study published in *Brain Stimulation* offers new hope for individuals suffering from severe depression unresponsive to traditional treatments. Researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in significantly reducing depressive symptoms.
The multi-site trial involved 500 participants across 84 locations in the US with treatment-resistant depression. Each participant received a pacemaker-like device implanted under the skin, delivering electrical pulses to the left vagus nerve, which in turn affects mood-regulating brain regions.
Results showed a substantial reduction in depressive symptoms in a significant portion of the participants, as measured by standardized scales and self-reported data. Some participants even achieved remission. Study co-author Charles Conway highlighted the statistically significant improvements in depressive symptoms, quality of life, and functional outcomes, noting the lasting effects of VNS in responsive patients.
While the findings are encouraging, widespread adoption faces hurdles. The high cost of the device and implantation surgery currently prevents accessibility for most, as private insurance typically doesn’t cover the procedure. The research team is now working to secure coverage from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to make this promising treatment available to a broader patient population.
